A prisoner suspected of having a key role in a website that shares child porn will face trial in Swindon next year.

Brett Jay Saunders, who currently resides in HMP The Verne, in Portland, is in custody after being accused of making thousands of indecent images of children and sharing them globally on the dark web.

The 50-year-old is charged with being a global moderator of a TOR website known as Alice in Wonderland between September 2, 2020, and August 17, 2022.

Court documents say the site is led by an organized crime group which facilitates the exploitation of children under the age of 13 by producing illegal images and then sharing the explicit material online to other users.

During the described dates, he allegedly distributed 16 Category A photographs – which is the most serious kind of child abuse imagery – as well as nine photographs from Category B and 90 others in Category C.

Before August 17, 2022, the defendant allegedly made 58,365 Category C images, 1,572 Category B images, and 1,897 Category A images.

On August 17, 2022, he allegedly had four prohibited images of a child in his possession.

He faces nine charges – arrange/facilitate the sexual exploitation of a child under 13, participate in the criminal activities of an organized crime group, three counts of distributing indecent photographs of a child, three counts of making indecent photographs of a child, and possessing a prohibited image of a child.

His trial by jury begins at Swindon Crown Court on January 19, 2024.
