Murder investigation launched after man killed at Liverpool internet cafe

Police appeal for witnesses after 18-year-old was assaulted on London Road in city centre and died

London Road would have been busy on Saturday evening.

A murder investigation is under way after an 18-year-old man was fatally assaulted at an internet cafe in Liverpool city centre.

Emergency services were called to London Road near St George’s Hall to reports that the teenager had been attacked at about 5.50pm on Saturday.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene but he was later pronounced dead in hospital, Merseyside police said. The nature of the attack was unclear.

DCI Terry Davies said: “It is with great sadness that we confirm that an 18-year-old male has died following an incident in Liverpool city centre.

“We are in the very early stages of the investigation as we seek to establish what has taken place and who was involved.”

The internet cafe on London Road is behind Liverpool’s Lime Street station, the Empire theatre and the O2 Academy. The area would have been busy with people on a Saturday night.

About 12 police cars and vans were seen at the scene along with forensics investigators. Police vehicles and officers were also seen outside the Royal Liverpool university hospital on Saturday evening, according to witnesses.

Police asked anyone who was in the area from about 5.30pm onwards and who saw or heard anything suspicious to contact officers as a matter of urgency.

Merseyside police asked potential witnesses to direct message @MerPolCC on Twitter, message “Merseyside police contact centre” on Facebook or call @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 with reference 786 of 16 April.
