UK nationals charged with trafficking drugs into Australia
Three United Kingdom nationals have been charged after allegedly smuggling 24 kilograms of crystal meth worth more than $28 million into Australia last year. The trio, all aged in their 50s, were arrested yesterday in England following joint investigations by police and national crime agencies.
It is believed one of the accused who works in the cargo sector accepted a shipment filled with methamphetamine, failing to properly inspect it before it was given the all clear to travel to Australia. A second trio member is said to have travelled to the shipping centre in Croydon, south London, to pay for the shipment to Australia.
Upon arrival in Australia in July 2021, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers selected the consignment for examination. It revealed 24 plastic bags, each containing one kilo of a crystalline substance. Subsequent testing confirmed this to be methamphetamine.
The ABF referred the consignment to the Australian Federal Police for further investigation.Inquiries into the syndicate in Australia led to the identification of the subjects. The three individuals were charged with being concerned in the exportation of Class A drugs last night.
They will appear at the Croydon Magistrates Court in London.
