Malta: Cocaine intercepted en route to Turkey

In Malta, authorities seized 800 kilograms of cocaine on Thursday. The drugs were in a refrigerated container with boxes of bananas and shipped from the Colombian port of Turbo. The catch is a record for Malta. The container was in transit and on its way to Turkey.

The final destination was Mersin, Turkey’s largest seaport in the south of the country. Customs officers discovered the cocaine when the container passed through a scanning device.

In 2019, a total of 750 kilos of cocaine was packed in 13 shipments in Malta. In 2020 it was 612 kilos (in one shipment) and in 2021 it was 740 kilos (also in one shipment). This week’s seizure is the first cocaine seizure this year.
